What is Hepatitis A+B?

Hepatitis A and Hepatatis B are liver infections caused by the Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B viruses, respectively. Hepatitis A is highly infectious but less deadly. Hepatitis B is less frequently caught but is more harmful and longlasting.

Hepatitis A can be transmitted via contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B is most commonly transmitted via exchange of bodily fluids including sexual fluids, and hospital, dental and tattoo salon equipment.

How does the vaccination work?

The Hepatits A vaccine contains inactivated virus which prepares the body's immune system to fight the real infection.

The Hepatits B vaccine contains rDNA components of the Hep B virus which prepares the body's immune system to fight the real infection. It is recommended to have 3 or 4 doses of the combined Hep A+B vaccines at 0, 1 and 6 months intervals. An accelerated 4 dose course can be given at 0, 7, and 21 days followed by a dose at 12 months after the first dose.

Travellers to certain high risk countries. Risk increases with particular behaviours including sexual activity, job exposure, getting tattooed or receiving medical or dental treatment in risk countries.
